SASS Shooters Handbook January 2005 Eleventh Edition Safety Practices (page 37) 6. Six-guns are always loaded with only five rounds and the hammer lowered and left resting on the empty chamber. Five shooters may load five rounds, but the hammer must rest on a dummy chamber or safety slot in the cylinder so the hammer does not rest on a live round/cap. Safety Practices (page 41) 18. When changing location during a stage, all firearms being carried must either have the hammer down on an empty chamber or spent case, or have the action open.
SASS Range Operations Basic Safety Course Version FAppendix A – Range Rules (page 11) 4. Six-guns are ALWAYS loaded with only five rounds and the hammer lowered and resting on the empty chamber. Five shooters may load five rounds, but the hammer must rest on a dummy chamber or safety slot in the cylinder so the hammer does not rest on a live round/cap. All guns are loaded based upon stage requirements. Loading more than the correct number of rounds in long guns will result in the assessment of a 10-second Minor Safety Penalty.
Failure to adhere to loading and unloading procedures will result in a Stage Disqualification.
Stage Disqualification (page18) • Changing location with a cocked gun or a gun with the hammer down on a live round.
• Holstering or staging a pistol with the hammer down on a live round
Pocket RO Card (page 27) Holstering or staging gun with hammer cocked (not fully down) or down (on a live round) = SDQ
Changing location with a cocked gun/gun w/hammer down on live round = SDQ
The Stage Disqualification makes any other safety penalties and/or misses moot.
