Rifle 10 (Staged on table at A)
Pistols 10 + 1 (Holstered)
Shotgun 6+ (Staged on table at Box A)
Stage description: Standing in box A, hands on brim of hat (hat on head), at
the beep pick up the rifle and Nevada sweep the four rifle targets. Replace
rifle open and empty back on table. Draw first pistol (or pistols, depending on
category) and engage the three pistol targets in a Nevada sweep, repeat sequence
with the second pistol (both sweeps starting from the same side). After the
first ten shots have been fired from the pistols reload one round from the body
and shoot the bonus target. The bonus is 5 seconds if hit and is not counted as
a miss if missed. Re-holster pistol. Retrieve shotgun and engage the six
shotgun targets until down.
At the beep the shooter correctly engages the rifle targets and places the rifle
down open and empty on the table. Shooter then correctly engages the first ten
shots with the pistols and reaches down to his/her belt for a reload. At this
time the shooter realizes that he/she does not have any additional rounds on
them. Shooter re-holsters the pistol, retrieves the shotgun and knocks down all
shotgun targets.
What's the Call or Calls?
A)No
Call
B)Procedural
C)Miss
D)Procedural
and a Miss
E)Failure
to Engage
The Correct
answer is:
(B) Procedural
The Correct
Reasoning is:
A
miss would not be assessed because it was written in the stage description
that missing the bonus target would not count as a miss.
SASS Shooters Handbook pg 31. Failure to stage guns
or ammunition at the designated position(s) is the
fault of the competitor and scored as a procedural unless the competitor is
able to correct the situation unassisted, while in the process of
completing the stage under the
clock.
The Failure to
Engage penalty would not apply because the shooter showed the intent to
reload when he went to his belt for a round to reload. This was a case of
"brain fade" in forgetting to bring extra rounds for the reload.
SASS Shooters Handbook pg 29. A "failure to engage"
occurred when a competitor willfully or
intentionally disregards the stage instructions in order to
obtain a competitive advantage (i.e., taking the penalty would result in a
lower score or faster time than following the instructions) and
is not assessed simply because a competitor "makes a mistake."
In such a case, in addition to any penalties for misses, a 30-second failure
to engage/Spirit of the Game penalty is assessed.
